SALMONID HABITAT SURVEY

Salmonid habitat surveys are carried out to comply with environment regulator criteria. These surveys can be undertaken to determine and quantify the amount of spawning substrate available to salmon (Salmo salar), migratory trout (sea trout - Salmo trutta) and resident (non-migratory) brown trout (Salmo trutta) in watercourses potentially affected by hydroelectric, road scheme or other developments.
Requirements for surveys will be application and site specific. They are often required for hydropower and windfarm schemes where access tracks and/or abstraction could potentially affect wild fish stocks. It is recommended that all applicants seek pre-application advice to ensure that they carry out surveys appropriate to their development. This will not only ensure that the required information is provided for the planning department to determine the planning application but will save expense on surveys/work that is not necessary for the application.
We carry out salmonid habitat surveys throughout Scotland which includes Highland and the Western Isles down to Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders and further afield including England, Wales, Northern Ireland and ROI.
